Dr. Marc Zaré is a nationally recognized, board-certified surgeon whose career has been shaped by surgical innovation, academic research, and extensive experience in minimally invasive, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery. Since 2002, his work has focused on gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric surgery, and hernia repair, including complex abdominal wall reconstruction.
Over more than two decades, Dr. Zaré has developed and refined his surgical approach through extensive operative experience, academic inquiry, and the thoughtful application of evolving technology. His background includes pioneering work in sleeve gastrectomy, early adoption of advanced robotic techniques in Northern California, peer-reviewed research, and significant hospital leadership.

Dr. Zaré developed his interest in minimally invasive surgery during his residency at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where he received recognition for his work in laparoscopic surgery. He continued his surgical development at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before joining Boston University and the Boston VA healthcare system as an Assistant Professor of Surgery.
His career has included early work in sleeve gastrectomy and the adoption of advanced robotic techniques in general surgery. He has presented research at more than 50 scientific meetings and authored peer-reviewed publications, including work published in Annals of Surgery.
His clinical practice encompasses complex abdominal wall reconstruction, inguinal and hiatal hernia repair, gastrointestinal surgery, colon resection, gallbladder surgery, and bariatric procedures. Across these areas, his approach emphasizes careful patient selection, appropriate surgical technique, and clinical decisions informed by evidence and experience.
Surgical Leadership
At Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California, Dr. Zaré serves as Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program. He previously served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He has also held leadership roles with the Santa Clara County Independent Practice Association.
These responsibilities have given him a perspective on surgical care that extends beyond the operating room to clinical programs, quality, and the broader systems in which medicine is practiced.
